The term “photographic eye” is commonly used in the Chinese-speaking photography community to describe a photographer’s keen observational skills and high-quality work.

However, the phrase carries subtle nuances in different contexts.

When others use it to describe a photographer, it’s usually meant as a compliment and acknowledgment of their talent.

But if someone claims to have a “photographic eye” or openly emphasizes that their work is the result of this ability, they might attract ridicule or criticism from online skeptics.

Everyone has their own “photographic eye”, and no one should be criticized or attacked online just for claiming to have one.

To me, the true essence of a “photographic eye” lies in each person’s unique way of perceiving and interpreting the world around them. In other words, the details and perspectives we focus on are entirely our own—this is exactly what makes photography so diverse and a true expression of personal style.

The reason I chose to write about this somewhat sensitive topic is that I often see people in certain online photography forums getting attacked by specific users simply for mentioning the term “photographic eye.”

Honestly, I went through a similar experience in my early years—even facing group attacks. It didn’t just affect my emotions; it also made me doubt my own photography skills. It took a while for me to adjust and regain my confidence.

As I mentioned earlier, the “photographic eye” is about an individual’s unique perception and interpretation of the world. It is this very uniqueness that makes photography an art form deeply rooted in personal perspective.

However, within photography communities and online platforms, it’s common to see people criticizing or even attacking creators simply because their work doesn’t align with their own aesthetic preferences.

This kind of behavior stems from a “my aesthetic is superior” mindset—one that is both narrow and restrictive.

Photography has never been about right or wrong; it’s an open-ended expression of how each person sees the world. Rather than rushing to criticize, why not take a moment to understand another’s perspective? Doing so may broaden our own view of the world and help keep photography open to endless creative possibilities.

If the roles were reversed and you were the one being criticized, would you still feel so justified in attacking others?

Having been in the photography community for so long, I’ve come across many keyboard photographers. Some take decent photos, while others are just average. But their biggest flaw isn’t their skill level—it’s their refusal to confront their own shortcomings while eagerly picking apart others.

I don’t bother critiquing such people’s work because, to me, it doesn’t even hold enough value to warrant a second glance.

It’s not necessarily that their photos are bad, but rather that their mindset makes it impossible to connect with them.

A true photography enthusiast focuses on self-improvement rather than tearing others down to feel superior.

If you find yourself feeling envious of someone else’s work, that’s not their fault—it’s a sign that you should reflect on yourself.

Photography isn’t a battlefield; there’s no winning or losing—only growth or stagnation.

Which path will you choose?
